Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Round Table of the American Library Association

The Spring 2013 GLBT Round Table Newsletter shows how busy round table members were during Midwinter–determining awards, creating lists, discussing censorship, and finalizing the list of candidates for the next GLBTRT Executive Board. More information in the newsletter includes publicity for the Stonewall awards, discussion items on the round table’s email list, book summaries, brief obituaries, and upcoming events.

Thanks as always to Nel Ward and the GLBTRT Newsletter Committee for a great issue.

The recent issue of the round table’s newsletter is now available on the GLBT Round Table website [pdf file 949kb].

Thanks to David Vess, all the reviewers/columnists, and Jorge Perez for their help and support. Also to Eli Gandour-Rood who writes about iQueeries, the new student group at the University of Washington, and Steve Stratton who writes about the IFLA conference last summer in Helsinki. Other pieces discuss virtual meetings for ALA groups, thanks to notes from a webinar on the subject, and information about the GLBTRT mentor program. Kristen Hylton, liaison for GLBTRT and NMRT, introduces herself.

The Midwinter GLBTRT schedule and directions to the social are also in the newsletter as well as other news bits. Very important is Larry Romans’ article on how to become a candidate for a GLBTRT office. It’s not too late!

If you have questions or comments about the newsletter, please email me at nelcward@charter.net. The next newsletter will be a Winter Supplement to announce awards, booklists, and candidates for GLBTRT offices.

The deadline for the spring issue is March 15, 2013. Keep the news and articles coming in! Reviewers’ deadline is March 1 so that the reviews can be edited.

The GLBT Round Table will feature a discussion of book challenges, censorship and banned books as part of its ALA Midwinter Conference schedule. The event is scheduled for Saturday, January 26 from 10:30 to 11:30 at the The Fairmont Olympic Hotel, 411 University Street, Seattle, WA.

The session will feature Angela Maycock, Assistant Director of the Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF), providing a brief overview of how to deal with a challenge and the work of the OIF in dealing with challenges and bans. There will be a chance for questions to both Ms. Maycock and librarians who have dealt with these situations in their libraries.
