After it was reported that the new Power Rangers movie contains an LGBT+ character, Russia placed the highest age restriction possible on the film. Russia cited “propaganda” as their reasoning for the restriction.
The film depicts male characters repeatedly “freaking out” when they are confronted with nudity or each others crotches. The director, who also stared in the film, said these are not meant to be homophobic, but intended to be humorous. He also mentioned the film has gay characters.
While we do see increased representation of LGBT+ characters in Hollywood films, this representation lags behind television, as illustrated by two studies. First, a 2016 report by the University of Southern California found that 82 of the 100 top movies of 2015 did not depict one LGBT speaking or named character. In a second study, GLAAD found that of major studio releases in 2015, 17.5% contained characters identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender — a percentage that was unchanged from 2014.
