South Carolina College Funding Comes With Strings

You may remember a few months ago when the South Carolina House cut funding from two universities in that state because they had the audacity to assign LGBT-related reading material to students. The South Carolina Senate has restored the cut funding, but the restoration has come with the provision that the schools must use the money to teach “American ideals” (because, apparently, LGBT acceptance isn’t American). The suggested topics from the Senate include the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Alison Pipemeier, a professor at the College of Charleston (one of the two affected schools), summed the offer up nicely: “this isn’t academic freedom–it’s academic bartering.”
