Meet Michael Penrod! An RT Member Profile

By A. Faulkner

What is your role in the GLBTRT?

General member.

What does the GLBTRT mean to you?

I so value the opportunity to gather with the community and to learn from them.

Are you involved in ALA in other ways?

Nope.

What professional work do you perform?

It is my honor to serve as the Director of the Wood County District Public Library in Bowling Green, Ohio.

What would you like to share about your personal life?

My husband, Ken, teaches high school chemistry and anatomy.  We have been together 11 years and married since 2015.  I am a Trek-loving, scifi/fantasy fan that loves to travel.  We live in a rural area and have two dogs.

What are you most proud of?

I am honored to have found a profession that allows a geeky, book nerd to make a difference in the local community.

Who inspires you?

My now-retired, former boss Elaine.  While one can never put another on a pedestal… she comes very close to deserving that honor.  She taught me so much about libraries and about serving others.

What are your goals? (Professional and/or personal.)

Professional:  Get more involved at the state-level and with the RT after my next levy campaign.

Personal:  Be able to afford to take two big vacations each year.

What do you think (or predict) is the future of libraries?

I think the future is bright, and that the need will never decrease.  While we may do things in new ways, I think we will always have a role to play in our local community.

In what direction would you like the GLBTRT to move in the future?

I love all of the work the RT has done for building awareness of new GLBT+ books and authors across the greater community – and I think this will need to continue for many more years.

If you could be transported into the fictional world of any book, where would you go?

If I could still have modern medical care, I love the worlds of Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett or Tolkien’s Shire.

What would be the title of your autobiography?

The Mild Life.

If you could only choose one song to play every time you entered a room for the rest of your life, what would it be?

The Shape of Things to Come from Battlestar Galactica

If you could have a dinner party with 5 culturally or historically significant figures, living or dead, who would you invite?

Jesus, Abraham Lincoln, Queen Elizabeth I, Martin Luther King, Jr., and my Mom.  I’d love to be able to share one more meal with her.

What is the meaning of life?

To be good, just, kind, loving, and humble as we work to better ourselves, the lives of others, and the world and universe in which we live.
