Chinese court blocks same-sex marriage in first case of its kind

Sue Wenlin sued the civil affairs bureau in the city of Changsha for the right to marry his partner. A few hours into the case, a district judge dismissed the case. So why does this matter?

Activists say that this is the first time to their knowledge that a court has agreed to hear a case related to same-sex marriage in China in the first place. Via PinkNews:

Following the swift dismissal, Sun said he believed the court had not taken enough time to consider their case and been “too cautious”.

Despite the set [back], he vowed to carry on his fight for the right to marry.

“We will continue to appeal. I think it is worthwhile. It catches people’s attention and it will help our opinions spread,” Sun told The Guardian.

“All I need is freedom and equality,” he added.

“What we are trying to achieve is freedom and equality.”

Earlier hundreds of LGBT campaigners had gathered outside the court to show their support for the couple’s case.
