Captain Underpants removed from school book fair due to gay content

By John Mack Freeman

The twelfth book in the popular Captain Underpants  series has been banned from one school’s book fair because of its GLBT content. Via WXYZ:

“Captain Underpants and the Sensational Sag of Sir Stinks-A-Lot” is the 12th novel in author Dav Pilkey’s series. Pilkey recently announced that a main character in the book is gay.

“Scholastic notified us and the school that there was a book that may be a little controversial,” said Dr. Barry Martin, superintendent of Monroe Public Schools.

As a result, there are Captain Underpants books available at the Arborwood Elementary School Book Fair, just not the most recent release.

“The school decided we’ll make it available online,” said Martin. “But, we won’t make it available in the actual book fair itself.”

Martin says the school’s Parent-Teacher Organization made the decision because according to the PTO, the actual book fair is kids shopping on their own.
