Judge validates 500 marriages performed in Arkansas “window” period

By John Mack Freeman

A judge has validated the 500 same-sex marriages that occurred during a window period in Arkansas when same-sex marriage was briefly legal. Via Advocate.com:

Pulaski County Circuit Judge Wendell Griffen affirmed marriage rights for the same-sex couples who wed after another judge tossed out Arkansas’s marriage equality ban last year. […]

In his ruling, Judge Griffen made his feelings about Walther clear: “With shameless disrespect for fundamental fairness and equality, [Walther] insists on treating the marriages of same-sex couples who received marriage licenses between May 9 and May 15 as ‘void from inception as a matter of law.'”

It is widely expected that the United States Supreme Court will invalidate anti-same-sex marriage laws by the end of their current session at the end of this month.
