Singapore Halts LGBT Book Pulping

By John Mack Freeman

Two weeks ago, we reported that the nation of Singapore had slated several LGBT-themed items to be pulped. The city-state has stopped this action after an outcry from people and librarians both in the country and around the world that were crying censorship. While one book was destroyed, two other items were saved. However, the books being saved from removal is not a complete win for them. Instead, the items will be moved to the adult section of the library, and adults will have to check them out for them to be available to children. Yaacob Ibrahim, the country’s information minister, ordered the move and approved of the change.

Via The Guardian:

The two books to be moved to the adult section of public libraries are And Tango Makes Three – a true story about two male penguins in a New York zoo that raised a baby penguin – and The White Swan Express, which features children adopted by straight, gay, mixed-race and single parents.

The book that was destroyed is Who’s In My Family?, which discusses different types of families, including gay couples.
