‘Fun Home’ Goes to Charleston

Alison Bechdel, author of the graphic narrative Fun Home, was so horrified that South Carolina legislators had censored her book that she helped make arrangements to have the off-Broadway musical based on the book presented at the College of Charleston. Two performances were shown on the evening of April 21 with almost 1,000 tickets sold within 24 hours of the announcement. The book had been on a list of summer recommended reading for incoming freshmen. Readers may recall that the government of South Carolina has threatened to remove $52,000 in state funding from the school for assigning the book as required summer reading.
