Gay Men Honored by Stamps in Two Countries

Two countries are releasing stamps to honor gay men. In Finland, the late graphic artist Tom of Finland, born Touko Laaksonen, will be represented on a new series of stamps to be available in September (NSFW-ish). Tom of Finland became an icon because of his homoerotic drawings. is about to become further cemented as an icon for his contributions to gay art and history thanks to a new a series of stamps.

In the United States, a stamp with a 1977 black and white photograph of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official, has just been unveiled. Daniel Nicoletta of Grants Pass (OR) took the picture. Milk was assassinated soon after he won a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. The first day of issue for the stamp is May 22, California’s Harvey Milk Day. The ceremony will be at the White House and six days later on May 28 in San Francisco.
