Check Out The Advocate’s Review of Welcome To Night Vale

By Ashley R. Lierman

Yesterday, The Advocate posted a review of the wildly popular podcast Welcome to Night Vale. The podcast, which takes the form of a community radio program broadcasting from a very strange little desert town, has become well-known for its wicked sense of humor and its seamless blend of the banal everyday with the disturbing and bizarre. Just as notable, however, is the fact that the narrator (voiced by Cecil Baldwin, and usually the only voice heard on the show) is in love with, and ultimately in a relationship with, another man. One of the elements Night Vale has been most praised for is its portrayal of diversity, in terms of gender and race as well as sexuality, and the same-sex relationship at its heart is perhaps treated as the least peculiar thing in its entire narrative universe. In its review, The Advocate speaks with Baldwin and Dylan Marron, who plays the role of his boyfriend, about the show’s commitment to diversity, and the meaning it holds for its many fans.
