Dreamworks Film to Feature Gay Character

In this summer’s How To Train Your Dragon 2, the character of Gobber the Belch will come out. The gruff viking was responsible for training youngsters in the first film how to fight dragons. The character is voiced by Craig Ferguson. As Gobber watches a straight couple argue, he says “That’s why I never got married.” Ferguson improved an addition to the line that it was that and “one other reason.” The director liked it, so it made the movie’s final cut.

This is not the first time in recent years when animated films have had a low-key queer presence. The gay joke at the end of ParaNorman sent many rightwing activists into a frenzy of gnashing teeth. Also, the first trailer for 2014’s The Boxtrolls featured families made up of same sex parents.
