Activists Challenge Ugandan Draconian Anti-LGBT Law

LGBT rights activists, including parliament member Fox Odoi and former opposition leader Ogenga Latigo, are challenging the constitutionality of the Ugandan Anti-Homosexuality Act. The new law mandates life imprisonment for homosexuals, a violation of Article 21 of the country’s constitution because it does not regulate behavior of heterosexual people, according to the activists. They also filed a permanent injunction to prevent media from publishing photos and names of allegedly LGBT people. The appeal to the Constitutional Court also refers to Article 19 which gives parliament the power to create laws for the betterment of Ugandan society.

Legally married same-sex couples gained a bit more last Friday when the Department of Health and Human Services required insurance companies to provide these couples equal coverage to opposite-sex spouses.  just gained a little more recognition in the eyes of the federal government. The directive for all states takes effect in 2015.
