ALSC’s Light the Way Award to Raleigh Library’s LGBT Center

The LGBT Center of Raleigh Library (Raleigh, NC) has been awarded the 2014 Light the Way: Library Outreach to the Underserved Grant of $3,000 for its LGBT Family Story Time project. The award from the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) honors Newbery medalist and Geisel winner Kate DiCamillo, who won her second Newbery this year for Flora & Ulysses. Intended as a one-time award, the award is now funded by Candlewick Press.

The money will help serve members of the LGBT community in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill Research Triangle Community of about 2 million people by providing networking and an affirming space for LGBT and ally families with children ages 0-6 and increasing the use of the library’s space and materials’ circulation. The library will partner with Out! Raleigh, SAGE Raleigh and Marbles Kids Museum.

The Library’s collection development priorities are aimed at supporting the resource and information needs of the Center’s vital outreach programs such as SAGE Raleigh, Youth Coffeehouse, Affirming Faith Forum, and Transgender Initiative.

Kudos to GLBTRT member Erin Marie Iannacchione!
