March was a big month for the “Big D” when the city welcomed two authors whose books were honored by the Stonewall Mike Morgan & Larry Romans Children’s & Young Adult Literature Award Committee.

On March 2, Tim Federle, author of a 2014 Honor Book Better Nate Than Ever, spoke at the Dallas Museum of Art as part of its “Arts & Letters Live” series.  Federle talked about how his real-life Broadway experience shaped the plots of his award winner Better Nate Than Ever and its sequel, Five, Six, Seven, Nate.

Leslea Newman, author of a 2013 Honor Book October Mourning: A Song for Matthew Shepherd, spoke to a near-capacity crowd at the March 6th event organized by the Friends of the Dallas Public Library as part of its AuthorSpeak series.  Newman read from her work and talked about her experiences in Laramie (WY) during the week after Shepherd’s tragic murder.  This well-received event was one of the largest to-date.
