Ben Carson: LGBT People Don’t Deserve “Extra Rights”

“…no one gets extra rights. Extra rights means you get to redefine everything for everybody else,” claims Carson.  These are characteristic comments from Carson who has, in the past, said such things as transgender people are “abnormal” and don’t deserve “extra rights,” such as being allowed to use public restrooms corresponding to their gender identity.  As The Advocate points out, he has also characterized marriage equality as an “extra right”.

In A Small Texas Town, A New Private Detention Center For Transgender Migrants Brings Jobs — And Concerns

Of the approximately 700 migrants that are expected to be housed at the Prairieland Detention Center, 36 are expected to be trans individuals, who will be housed in a separate unit.  This facility will be the second one to of its kind built specifically to hold trans detainees, and intends to address concerns of detainees receiving medications in a timely manner, as well as allegations of physical and emotional abuse reported by detainees in other facilities.

LGBT Community Worries Extend Beyond Itself To Other, More Vulnerable People

While Donald Trump has referred to himself, in the past, as a supporter of LGBT rights, the majority of his Cabinet picks, and his vice president, have histories of opposition to LGBT rights.  The anti-gay anxieties extend beyond LGBT people to those who may be more vulnerable, such as Muslims and people in the country illegally.

CIA Director Nominee Mike Pompeo Vows to Treat LGBT Equally Despite Anti-Gay Votes and Views

Pompeo, a deeply conservative evangelical Christian who says, “America had worshipped other Gods and called it multiculturalism. We’d endorsed perversion and called it an alternative lifestyle” also says he “can’t imagine putting in place any policy that was discriminatory with respect to any employee.”
