New Documentary Series Follows Life of Trans Teen

By Ashley R. Lierman

I Am Jazz, a new documentary series airing on TLC,  follows the life of 14-year-old Jazz Jennings, a trans girl and outspoken trans youth activist, reports The Advocate. Jennings is one of an increasing number of prominent trans people in the media, but certainly much younger than most of her contemporaries . As the Advocate points out, this fact is especially important considering the high rates of homelessness, bullying, and suicide attempts among transgender youth: Jennings’ youth and prominence provide an opportunity for identification and a role model to a high-risk population. In I Am Jazz, she and her family deal frankly in front of the cameras with issues around Jennings’ medical transition, as well as the emotional content of her journey and the day-to-day trivia of her life.

The series airs Wednesdays at 10/9 Central. Clips are available at TLC’s site.
