Meet David Isaak!: An RT member profile

By Tess Goldwasser

David is the Chair of the GLBTRT Web Committee. The RT’s web presence is spread over many platforms: Drupal (main website), WordPress (4 blogs), Twitter, Facebook, and LibraryThing. David coordinates all the content and technological updates to these various platforms. He has been a member of GLBTRT since joining ALA nine years ago and previously served on the Membership Committee.

David is the Digital Projects Librarian at Kaiser Permanente’s Center for Health Research. He manages the organization’s repository of research articles, catalogs SAS code and related documentation for a knowledge base, and works on keeping the investigators informed about changes in scholarly communication.

He has been with his partner Misha (who was one of the attorneys who helped bring marriage equality to the state of Oregon) for 10 years. They were married in a non-legal religious ceremony in Pennsylvania in 2008. The following month, California became the first state to allow out-of-state residents to marry. They were in Anaheim for ALA that year, so they got married again in the courthouse by the LAX airport! It was one of the pre-Prop 8 marriages that continued to be valid.

David has passions for astronomy, LGBTQI history, mysteries, the Portland Timbers Football Club, pub quizzes, and science-fiction, his current main goal in life is to kick his coffee addiction, and his spirit animal is a turtle.

If David could have a dinner party with five culturally or historically significant figures, living or dead, he would invite Janelle Monáe, James Baldwin, Cleopatra VII, David Lynch, and Octavia Butler. He says, “After dinner we would play an epic game of Pictionary.”
