Arizona school says no to same sex homecoming couple

Willow Canyon High School in Arizona has said that they will not count ballots that listed two girls as nominees for that schools Homecoming couple. They are saying that the Homecoming couple has traditionally been one male and one female, and that joint nominations have never been accepted. All ballots that nominated the two girls are being thrown out of consideration.

“We’re tired of the social normality that the king and queen have to be male and female,” said junior student Kody Jiles, who added that it was unfair for the school to veto ballots.

Senior student Samantha Breedveld said: “You’re our school, you’re meant to support your students, not shut them down saying you’re only supposed to do this. It’s just wrong.”

This dovetails with a campaign by high schoolers in Oregon who want to have a trans-inclusive Homecoming process.
