New Documentary The Dog Explores Life of Bisexual Bank Robber

By Ashley R. Lierman

The Dog, directed  by Allison Berg and Frank Keraudren, chronicles the life of John Wojtowicz, who was the inspiration for Al Pacino’s character in Dog Day Afternoon. Wojtowicz was a complicated character: an early gay rights activist and a proponent of same-sex marriage at a time when the issue was not even being considered by the nascent gay liberation movement, who attempted to rob a Brooklyn bank to fund his transgender partner’s medical transition. The film explores these aspects of his life and more, placing them against the historical backdrop of early gay activism.

The Dog is currently playing in a limited release in theaters, and will be available on iTunes August 15th.
