Iconic comic book character Archie Andrews will officially meet his end in an upcoming issue, saving the life of his friend Kevin Keller, the first openly gay character in Archie Comics. Keller is a military veteran who has now married and has been elected to the Senate. He returns to Riverdale to advocate for gun control. According to a recent announcement, Archie will be shot while protecting Keller from an assassination attempt during this visit. Via Mashable:
“The way in which Archie dies is everything that you would expect of Archie,” said Jon Goldwater, Archie Comics publisher and co-CEO. “He dies heroically. He dies selflessly. He dies in the manner that epitomizes not only the best of Riverdale but the best of all of us. It’s what Archie has come to represent over the past almost 75 years.”
