PS Classics has released an album of the musical based on Alisonâ€™s Bechdelâ€™s Fun Home. The cartoonistâ€™s graphic memoir reveals the authorâ€™s developing understanding of her sexuality while she was a child and addresses questions about her closeted fatherâ€™s hidden life and sudden death. The New York Times reviewed the production at the Public Theater in New York as â€œa shining clarity that lights up the night.”
A new biography of artist Norman Rockwell suggests that the artist had same-sex desires, and the family is not happy about the authorâ€™s descriptions of homoerotic undertones. American Mirror, published by FSG, was written by Deborah Solomon. The Norman Rockwell Museum (Stockbridge, MA) differs. Museum director Laurie Norton Moffatt described the book as â€œa well researched and written biography that presents many unique themes and interpretations about the artist.â€ The familyâ€™s objections are most likely guaranteeing brisk sales of the book.
Band of Thebes has released its list of 92 LGBT writers selecting the best books that they read during 2013. Also Autostraddle released its list of the top ten â€œqueer feminist books of 2013.â€
Lambda Literary has published an excellent feature article by Victoria BrownworthÂ about Katherine Forrest, Â author of the groundbreaking book Curious Wine â€œthat shifted the landscape of lesbian literature and opened the door to both a new generation of lesbian fiction and a new style.â€ Forrest is currently working on a biography of her first publisher, Barbara Grier, co-founder of Naiad Press.
