Uninsured LGBT rate drops 8 percent

The trend of the uninsured rate dropping nationally has been further reflected in the LGBT community. From 2013 to 2014, the uninsured rate among LGBT people making 400 percent or less of the national poverty line dropped from 34 to 26 percent according to a report by the Center for American Progress. Increased access to coverage and other benefits from the Affordable Care Act are cited in the report as being the main cause for the decline. It does note, however, that there are still numerous areas where insurance for LGBT people can be improved including raising awareness of insurance options in LGBT communities, collecting voluntary LGBT enrollment data, and ensuring that nondiscrimination is enforced in insurance coverage.
