Last week Alison Bechdel, openly gay comic artist and author of the Eisner- and Stonewall-winning graphic memoir Fun Home, was awarded a $625,000 ‘genius’ grant by the MacArthur Foundation. Bechdel is one of 21 recipients of the award for 2014.

Bechdel’s work has earned critical acclaim and multiple awards, and she is regarded as an influential gay and female voice in the world of comics. A musical adaptation of Fun Home was produced this year and will be Broadway-bound in the next year. Bechdel’s third graphic memoir, The Secret to Superhuman Strength, is forthcoming from Houghton Mifflin in 2017.
