{"id":598,"date":"2014-02-18T18:24:17","date_gmt":"2014-02-19T00:24:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.glbtrt.ala.org\/news\/?p=598"},"modified":"2014-02-18T18:24:17","modified_gmt":"2014-02-19T00:24:17","slug":"what-does-a-librarian-look-like","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.glbtrt.ala.org\/news\/archives\/598","title":{"rendered":"What Does a Librarian Look Like?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0When photographer Kyle Cassidy decided to find out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/behold\/2014\/02\/11\/kyle_cassidy_photographs_librarians_at_the_american_library_association.html \">whether his stereotype of a librarian was right,<\/a> he discovered a diversity of people\u2014starting with GLBTRT Executive Board member Ingrid Abrams who was the lead photo in a Slate article about Cassidy\u2019s experiences at the 2014 ALA Midwinter meeting. The librarian from Brooklyn Public Library said, \u201cWe&#8217;re a variety of ages. We&#8217;re every race, ethnicity and religious background imaginable. We can be the type who wears a suit and tie every day or someone like me, who has pink hair and dresses in bright colors\u2026. I assure you we&#8217;re a really dedicated and friendly bunch.\u201d Now Slate readers know that all of us librarians have long realized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Cassidy plans to go to Las Vegas for the ALA Annual Conference this coming summer. He said, \u201cI found myself meeting and spending time with people who I found heroic in an uncelebrated way\u2014people who were cheerful and joyful and serious and devoted. These are people who often spend their own time and money helping people.
