{"id":4046,"date":"2019-02-05T13:42:02","date_gmt":"2019-02-05T18:42:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.glbtrt.ala.org\/news\/?p=4046"},"modified":"2019-02-05T13:42:05","modified_gmt":"2019-02-05T18:42:05","slug":"glbt-round-table-statement-against-racism-harassment-and-bullying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.glbtrt.ala.org\/news\/archives\/4046","title":{"rendered":"GLBT Round Table Statement against Racism, Harassment, and Bullying"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Gay, Lesbian,\nBisexual, and Transgender Round Table (GLBTRT) expresses its support and stands\nin solidarity with ALA members who have experienced racism, discrimination, and\nmicroaggressions within our association, most recently, but certainly not only\nat the 2019 ALA Midwinter Meeting. We are categorically opposed to the\nharassment and aggression toward people of color in our profession and our\nprofessional community, online and in person.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The GLBTRT is\nalso deeply concerned and disturbed to have been made aware of past instances\nof homophobic and bullying remarks directed at a GLBTRT member on Council\nduring a discussion on a Council resolution. We are equally categorically\nopposed to the harassment, bullying, and discrimination of our members, and\npeople of all sexual orientations and gender identities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recognizing and\ncelebrating the wonderful diversity and intersectionality of voices and rich,\nlived experiences within the library community, and of the initial steps taken\nby ALA to address issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion through the\nefforts of the Office of Diversity, Literacy, and Outreach Services (ODLOS),\nthe GLBTRT acknowledges there is much more work to be done, and will continue\nto help create safe spaces for these voices to be heard and play an active role\nin our organization. In conjunction with ODLOS, and in solidarity with ALA&#8217;s\nfive ethnic affiliates, the American Indian Library Association, the Asian\nPacific American Librarians Association, the Black Caucus of the American\nLibrary Association, the Chinese American Librarians Association, and the\nAssociation to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the\nSpanish Speaking, the GLBTRT will continue to work toward greater inclusion\nwithin our association and professional community in whatever capacity it can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The GLBTRT also\ncalls on the American Library Association to be more proactive and transparent\nin reporting instances of racism, bullying, and discrimination and the action\ntaken to address these instances, to review and reinforce its code of conduct\nat all levels of the organization, and to provide opportunities for all members\nto participate in this review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Posted on behalf of the GLBTRT Executive Board.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Round Table (GLBTRT) expresses its support and stands in solidarity with ALA members who have experienced racism, discrimination, and microaggressions within our association, most recently, but certainly not only at the 2019 ALA Midwinter Meeting.
