The constitution now states: \u201cTo encourage all workers without regard to race, creed, color, sex, national origin, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression to share equally in the full benefits of union organization.\u201d Several of the 57 national and international unions representing over 12 million workers had already added this nondiscrimination policy to their own positions. A resolution in support of transgender-inclusive healthcare was not approved but will be reintroduced later.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Human Rights Campaign\u2019s Corporate Equality Index, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/gay-partner-benefits-growing-at-fortune-500-firms\/2013\/12\/08\/bd0e6d06-6044-11e3-a7b4-4a75ebc432ab_story.html  \"><b>more than two-thirds of Fortune 500 companies<\/b> and 90 percent of all large employers<\/a> it surveyed are offering health insurance and other spousal benefits to same-sex domestic partners of their employees. First-time corporations include Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Hormel Foods LLC, and Wendy\u2019s International Inc. A record number of businesses, 61 percent for Fortune 500 and 86 percent of the 737 surveyed companies, also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timewarnercable.com\/content\/twc\/en\/about-us\/press\/human-rights-campaign-names-twc-as-a-best-place.html\">have policies prohibiting discrimination against transgender people<\/a>. \u00a0 Time Warner Cable got a perfect score of 100, making it a &#8220;Best Place to Work for LGBT Employees\u201d\u2014for a second year.<\/p>\n<p>When <b>Pew Research <\/b>published \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewsocialtrends.org\/2013\/06\/13\/a-survey-of-lgbt-americans\/  \">A Survey of LGBT Americans: Attitudes, Experiences, and Values in Changing Times<\/a>,\u201d it concluded:\u00a0 \u201cThe survey finds that the LGBT population is distinctive in many ways beyond sexual orientation. Compared with the general public, Pew Research LGBT survey respondents are more liberal, more Democratic, less religious, less happy with their lives, and more satisfied with the general direction of the country. On average, they are younger than the general public. Their family incomes are lower, which may be related to their relative youth and the smaller size of their households. They are also more likely to perceive discrimination not just against themselves but also against other groups with a legacy of discrimination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.glbtrt.ala.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Linda-Sanchez-ENDA.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-391\" style=\"margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;\" alt=\"Linda Sanchez ENDA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.glbtrt.ala.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Linda-Sanchez-ENDA-300x200.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.glbtrt.ala.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Linda-Sanchez-ENDA-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.glbtrt.ala.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Linda-Sanchez-ENDA-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.glbtrt.ala.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Linda-Sanchez-ENDA-315x210.jpg 315w, https:\/\/www.glbtrt.ala.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Linda-Sanchez-ENDA-200x133.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.glbtrt.ala.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Linda-Sanchez-ENDA.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The 26 members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus <\/b>have come out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonblade.com\/2013\/12\/06\/hispanic-caucus-latest-endorse-enda\/  \">in support of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA)<\/a>. Last month, the Senate passed the bill by 64-32 votes, but House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) refused to bring the bill to the lower chamber. Other Latino organizations that support ENDA include\u00a0the Mexican American Legal Defense Fund, the League of United Latin American Citizens, and the Trans-Latina Coalition.<\/p>\n<p>Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter has signed legislation that <b>requires all new or renovated city-owned buildings<\/b> to include gender-neutral bathrooms, updates the city&#8217;s antidiscrimination protections to include transgender residents, and sets tax credits for companies with pro-LGBT benefits.<\/p>\n<p>A federal court in New Jersey <b>upheld the state&#8217;s new law banning \u201cconversion therapy\u201d for LGBT minors.<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The AFL-CIO, the country\u2019s largest labor federation, amended its constitution in September, banning discrimination based on gender identity or gender expression.
