His gay political writings were published by <i>Gay City News, The Village Voice, The New York Observer, New York Magazine,<\/i> and the <i>Parisian Daily Liberation<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.glbtrt.ala.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/John-Mitzel.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-369\" style=\"margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;\" alt=\"John Mitzel\" src=\"http:\/\/www.glbtrt.ala.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/John-Mitzel-147x150.png\" width=\"147\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>John Mitzel,<\/b> writer and owner of Boston\u2019s LGBT Calamus Bookstore, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lambdaliterary.org\/features\/rem\/10\/05\/writer-and-lgbt-bookstore-owner-john-mitzel-65-has-died\/ \">died on October 4, 2013 at the age of 65<\/a>. Both shaper and historian of the city\u2019s LGBT history, he wrote ten books of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Before purchasing the bookstore 13 years ago, Mitzel co-founded the radical newspaper <i>Fag Rag <\/i>in 1971. Last year writer Mark Thomas Krone wrote <a href=\"http:\/\/markthomaskrone.wordpress.com\/2012\/09\/09\/john-mitzel-isnt-going-anywhere\/\">an extensive article about Mitzel\u2019s rich life<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.glbtrt.ala.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Jose-Munoz.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-370\" style=\"margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;\" alt=\"Jose Munoz\" src=\"http:\/\/www.glbtrt.ala.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Jose-Munoz-147x150.png\" width=\"147\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Jos\u00e9 Esteban Mu\u00f1oz,<\/b> writer and academic, <a href=\"http:\/\/bullybloggers.wordpress.com\/2013\/12\/06\/jose-esteban-munoz-1966-2013\/\">died on December 4, 2013 at the age of 46<\/a>. He was a professor and former Chair of the Department of Performance Studies at New York University\u2019s Tisch School of the Arts and wrote and edited books dealing with race, sexuality, and gender including <i>Cruising Utopia: The Politics and Performance of Queer Futurity<\/i> and <i>Disidentifications: Queers of Color and the Performance of Politics. <\/i>Bully Bloggers wrote, \u201cWe lost a fierce friend, a comrade, a wry and trenchant critic, a brave and bold queer voice and a true utopian in a world of pessimists.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our In Memoriam series pays tribute to LGBT individuals of note that have passed away.
