{"id":2310,"date":"2016-01-03T15:24:30","date_gmt":"2016-01-03T21:24:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.glbtrt.ala.org\/news\/?p=2310"},"modified":"2016-01-03T15:24:30","modified_gmt":"2016-01-03T21:24:30","slug":"tennessee-lawmaker-wants-state-to-stop-issuing-marriage-licenses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.glbtrt.ala.org\/news\/archives\/2310","title":{"rendered":"Tennessee lawmaker wants state to stop issuing marriage licenses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By John Mack Freeman<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Tennessee State House Representative Rick Womick recently proposed that the state should stop issuing marriage licenses so that it would not have to issue licenses to same-sex couples as the Supreme Court ruled in?<em>Obergefell.?<\/em>Via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.advocate.com\/marriage-equality\/2015\/12\/27\/tennessee-republican-wants-state-stop-issuing-all-marriage-licenses\">Advocate.com:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The state Constitution?says that marriage is between one man and one woman, and my personal belief?is that God says that marriage is between one man and one woman,&#8221; Womick told the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dnj.com\/story\/news\/2015\/12\/26\/womick-seeks-end-marriage-licenses\/77918320\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Daily News Journal<\/em><\/a> on Tuesday. &#8220;He created Adam and Eve.?God didn?t create Adam and Winston.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That would take the state out of the marriage business altogether,&#8221; Womick added. &#8220;I think?that?s?probably the best approach given the legal climate.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If this were to pass, it would make Tennessee the first state to actively put such a law into action.
