{"id":2308,"date":"2016-01-03T15:16:30","date_gmt":"2016-01-03T21:16:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.glbtrt.ala.org\/news\/?p=2308"},"modified":"2016-01-03T15:16:30","modified_gmt":"2016-01-03T21:16:30","slug":"new-york-city-takes-new-steps-to-protect-trans-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.glbtrt.ala.org\/news\/archives\/2308","title":{"rendered":"New York City takes new steps to protect trans people"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By John Mack Freeman<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The New York City Commission On Human Rights released a new report from Mayor Bill de Blasio&#8217;s administration that outlines the way the city will interpret a 2002 law that protects the rights of trans people.<\/p>\n<p>First off, it has officially banned willful misuse of gender pronouns as part of a new update to the city?s 1945 Human Rights Law. Via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.queerty.com\/nyc-bans-willful-and-malicious-misuse-of-gender-pronouns-fines-up-to-250000-20151229\">Queerty<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The new guidance, released on December 21,?will fine employers, landlords and service providers up?to $250,000 for?deliberately?addressing individuals?by the wrong name or gender pronouns. New York City defines??gender? as one?s ?actual or perceived sex and shall also include a person?s gender identity, self-image, appearance, behavior or expression, whether or not that gender identity, self-image, appearance, behavior or expression is different from that traditionally associated with the legal sex assigned to that person at birth.?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It also states that any single-occupant bathroom <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lgbtqnation.com\/2015\/12\/all-new-york-city-single-occupancy-bathrooms-now-required-to-be-gender-neutral\/\">must be labelled<\/a> as being gender neutral and open for everyone.
