{"id":1797,"date":"2015-04-05T15:00:52","date_gmt":"2015-04-05T20:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.glbtrt.ala.org\/news\/?p=1797"},"modified":"2015-04-05T10:11:30","modified_gmt":"2015-04-05T15:11:30","slug":"oklahoma-university-sued-by-justice-department-for-trans-discrimination","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.glbtrt.ala.org\/news\/archives\/1797","title":{"rendered":"Oklahoma university sued by Justice Department for trans discrimination"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By John Mack Freeman<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A federal lawsuit filed by the U.S. Department of Justice this week alleges that a TA professor at Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant was denied promotion because?she was transgender.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lgbtqnation.com\/2015\/03\/justice-dept-sues-oklahoma-university-alleges-discrimination-against-transgender-professor\/\">Via LGBTQ Nation:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Rachel Tudor, an assistant professor of English at the university, didn?t receive a promotion despite a recommendation from her department chair and other tenured faculty from her department, according to the lawsuit filed in federal court in Oklahoma City.<\/p>\n<p>?We will not allow unfair biases and unjust prejudices to prevent transgender Americans from reaching their full potential as workers and as citizens,? Attorney General <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lgbtqnation.com\/tag\/eric-holder\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Eric Holder<\/b><\/a> said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Tudor began working at Southeastern in 2004 but started presenting herself as a woman in 2007 by wearing women?s clothing, styling her hair in a feminine way and going by the name Rachel, the lawsuit alleges.<\/p>\n<p>After she was denied tenure in 2010, Tudor filed a discrimination complaint.
