She will replace Martha Coakley (the outgoing attorney general) who lost her bid to become Massachusetts governor to her Republican opponent. Via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pinknews.co.uk\/2014\/11\/05\/us-lesbian-equality-lawyer-makes-history-as-first-out-attorney-general\/\">PinkNews<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Following her win, she said: \u201cI\u2019m so proud to be standing here as your next Attorney General. I will give it everything I\u2019ve got every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs Attorney General I\u2019m going to be your lawyer. I\u2019m going to be your advocate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite being considered an outsider in the race, the candidate \u2013 who was backed by the Gay &amp; Lesbian Victory Fund and the Human Rights Campaign \u2013 had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pinknews.co.uk\/2014\/09\/10\/us-lesbian-equality-lawyer-wins-massachusetts-democratic-primary\/\">trounced former state senator Warren Tolman by 62.4 percent to 37.6 percent in the Democratic Primary.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin\u00a0told the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2014\/11\/04\/maura-healey-attorney-general-massachusetts_n_6104314.html\">Huffington Post<\/a>: \u201cMaura Healey is one of the staunchest advocates for equality we have in this country, and we join her in celebrating her historic victory tonight.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By John Mack Freeman In this year&#8217;s midterm elections, equality lawyer Maura Healey became the first out LGBT person to be elected as a state attorney general in United States history.
