{"id":1384,"date":"2014-10-30T12:54:46","date_gmt":"2014-10-30T17:54:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.glbtrt.ala.org\/news\/?p=1384"},"modified":"2014-10-30T12:54:46","modified_gmt":"2014-10-30T17:54:46","slug":"apple-ceo-tim-cook-comes-out-as-gay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.glbtrt.ala.org\/news\/archives\/1384","title":{"rendered":"Apple CEO Tim Cook comes out as gay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By John Mack Freeman<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In an essay in this morning&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Businessweek,\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/articles\/2014-10-30\/tim-cook-im-proud-to-be-gay\">Apple CEO Tim Cook came out as gay.<\/a> Admitting that he had long been out in his personal life and to colleagues at Apple, Cook came out to the public at large saying in part: &#8220;I don\u2019t consider myself an activist, but I realize how much I\u2019ve benefited from the sacrifice of others. So if hearing that the CEO of Apple is gay can help someone struggling to come to terms with who he or she is, or bring comfort to anyone who feels alone, or inspire people to insist on their equality, then it\u2019s worth the trade-off with my own privacy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Cook&#8217;s sexuality has long been an open secret in much of the LGBT media. Earlier this year during a discussion of John Browne&#8217;s\u00a0<em>The Glass Closet\u00a0<\/em>on CNBC, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jeanbaptiste\/2014\/06\/27\/cnbc-host-accidentally-outs-apple-ceo-tim-cook-as-gay-video\/\">one of the panelists\u00a0Simon Hobb commented that Cook<\/a> was fairly open about his sexuality at a time when he in fact wasn&#8217;t.
