{"id":1342,"date":"2014-10-17T14:04:45","date_gmt":"2014-10-17T19:04:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.glbtrt.ala.org\/news\/?p=1342"},"modified":"2014-10-24T19:54:00","modified_gmt":"2014-10-25T00:54:00","slug":"new-documentary-short-to-showcase-retired-intersex-transwoman-truck-driver-patti-spangler","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.glbtrt.ala.org\/news\/archives\/1342","title":{"rendered":"New documentary short to showcase &#8220;retired intersex transwoman truck driver&#8221; Patti Spangler"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Ilyse Kramer<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Patti Spangler, who describes herself in her Huffington Post <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/patti-spangler\/trans-and-intersex-awaren_b_5966666.html?utm_hp_ref=transgender\">article<\/a> as \u201cretired intersex transwoman truck driver and aspiring activist,\u201d will share her story in the documentary short, <em>Trucker Patti, <\/em>at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sftff.org\/\">2014 San Francisco Transgender Film Festival <\/a>coming up in November.<\/p>\n<p>For over 25 years, Patti had lived in fear that her secret would be discovered\u2014with two X and one Y chromosome, she was born with a penis. She chose truck driving as a career because separating herself from others kept her secret safe. Patti nevertheless craved connection, and would call into LGBTQ radio shows while \u201ccruising down America\u2019s highways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In these conversations over satellite radio, she was surprised \u201cat how little gays and lesbians know [about] or understand the trans experience, let alone that of intersex people.\u201d She asked herself, how \u201ccan I expect straight people to understand trans and gender variant people, when so few in the LGB community understand us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Inspired to answer her own question, Patti began putting more of her life out in the open, and in doing so found herself embraced by lesbian, gay, and bisexual communities.
