McBeth was well known for transitioning at age 70 in 2005 from male to female while employed as a substitute teacher by several school systems in New Jersey. Upon returning, McBeth&#8217;s transition attracted national attention. Although this angered some parents, the school systems stood behind McBeth, reinstating her and defending their choices. Via\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/10\/04\/nyregion\/lily-mcbeth-a-focal-figure-for-transgender-rights-dies-at-80.html?emc=edit_th_20141004&amp;nl=todaysheadlines&amp;nlid=62806605&amp;_r=0\"><em>The New York Times:<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"228\" data-total-count=\"1860\">School administrators defended their decision, saying Ms. McBeth was a good teacher who had received positive evaluations in five years of substitute teaching.
