Wattpad is a massive writing community that promises to help writers connect with readers all over the world — giving writers a chance to find an audience and win recognition for their work. There’s a category for almost everything on Wattpad: if you want to read fiction for teens or stories about werewolves, it’s easy to find what you’re looking for on the site.
That is, unless you’re looking for stories about gay and lesbian characters. That’s right: there is no LGBT category on Wattpad. Most bookstores and publishers make it easy for readers to find exactly what they’re looking for — but Wattpad readers have to scroll through over 40 million stories by hand to find stories starring gay characters.
This is wrong. Writers deserve a chance for their works to be read. There is a category for almost everything on Wattpad, except this one area. There are over 25 million members on the site, and many of them may have no idea that this genre even exists on the site. Give the people a chance to showcase their work without forcing readers to go searching for it.
