By John Mack Freeman

The Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara-helmed Carol has won the 2015 Queer Palm at the Caanes Film Festival. Via Gay Star News:

Directed by Todd Haynes, ‘Carol’ is adapted from a Patricia Highsmith novel (‘The Price of Salt’) that tells the story of two women who fall in love in 1950s New York at a time when homosexuality was criminalized.

Blanchett plays Carol, a wealthy married woman who falls in love with an ambitious shopgirl played by Mara.

The film is the second film from the US and the UK to win the award. The Queer Palm is an independent sponsored prize given to the best LGBT-themed film submitted to the Caanes Film Festival. It was first awarded in 2010.
