Plano petition opposing Equal Rights Ordinance rejected

By John Mack Freeman

When trying to affect political change, it helps if people follow the instructions. Opponents of Plano’s Equal Rights Ordinance collected well over the 3,822 required signatures needed to put the law on the ballot in November. However, officials rejected the petition on several grounds. The petition inaccurately stated that the ordinance applied to bathrooms, and it failed to contain a full copy of the ordinance’s text as required by state law. And even though Plano had sent an e-mail to organizers prior to the deadline to bring these problems to light, no changes were made.

Because of these issues, the petition has been rejected, and Plano LGBT people remain protected by their Equal Rights Ordinance.
