US to appoint LGBT rights envoy

By John Mack Freeman

The United States State Department is expected to announce the creation of an LGBT rights envoy some time during February. While the envoy’s name has yet to be released, sources inside the State Department say that it is an openly gay member of the Foreign Service who is going through the final rounds of vetting at this time. Via PinkNews:

Democratic Senator Ed Markey, who previously tried to secure a rights envoy through a bill in Congress, said: “I welcome the State Department’s action on my call to make defending LGBT rights a foreign policy priority.

“This special envoy position at the State Department will be a global model for defending LGBT rights around the world.”
