IOC approves protections for LGB people, still waiting on the T

By John Mack Freeman

In a somewhat unexpected move, the International Olympic Committee unanimously approved a set of recommendations for making the Olympic Games better. Among these recommendations was a proposal to add sexual orientation to Principle Six. It was added to the section reading “”The enjoyment of the rights and freedoms set forth in this Olympic Charter shall be secured without discrimination of any kind, such as race, color, sex, sexual orientation, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.”

This is widely seen as a response to the outcry against major sporting events being held in anti-LGBT countries, such as the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia or the 2018 World Cup in Qatar. Protections for trans athletes were not included in this set of recommendations; however, many are still advocating for full equality at the Olympic Games.
