CHICAGO — The Executive Committee of Banned Books Week invites organizations and individuals, such as libraries, authors, publishers, bookstores and schools, to share how they are celebrating 2014’s Banned Books Week.  This year’s Banned Books Week, which is taking place from Sept. 21-27, will shine a light on comics and graphic novels. The committee has created a simple form on bannedbooksweek.org to which organizations can post their activities.

“We want to publicize the many events being organized around the country during Banned Books Week,” said Judy Platt, chair of the Banned Books Week Executive Committee, “to show the collective voice that is speaking out against censorship.”

Barbara Jones, executive director of ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom, echoes this sentiment. She said, “Banned Books Week just keeps growing and growing; it is a worldwide event now! We look forward to this year’s events, which will be in bookstores, libraries, radio shows, Google hangouts, and schools.  Pick up a graphic novel and enjoy.”

Event organizers are welcome to make use of the comics and graphic novels theme or create one of their own.

Banned Books Week celebrates the Freedom to Read by encouraging readouts, displays, and community activities designed to raise awareness of the ongoing threats of censorship that continue to occur.  Bannedbooksweek.org is a hub for information about how individuals and institutions can become involved in celebrating this important event.  The website also includes resources and activities provided by event sponsors.

Banned Books Week is sponsored by the American Booksellers Association, American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression, American Library Association, American Society of Journalists and Authors, Association of American Publishers, Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, Freedom to Read Foundation, National Association of College Stores, National Coalition Against Censorship, National Council of Teachers of English, PEN American Center and Project Censored.
