New Internet domains to raise money for HIV prevention

By John Mack Freeman

A new domain ending was released this week, and it seeks to provide websites with a tool to raise money for HIV prevention and research. The dotHIV initiative will be providing web addresses to businesses and nonprofits that end in “.hiv”. Dubbed the digital red ribbon, it is the first top-level domain ever created for a social cause. Carolin Silbernagl, co-founder of dotHIV, said: “Imagine simply using .hiv as you use .com.”

“Each time you visit ‘website.hiv,’ buy a ticket on ‘movies.hiv,’ or shop at ‘store.hiv,’ a small donation would reach HIV and AIDS projects.”

These micro-donations do not come at further expense to the user or the website owner.

The sites cost about $17 to register for a business and are free to nonprofits.
